GMOs? No thanks, we don’t want to turn you into a Mutant!
Imagine scientists going into a living thing's DNA and making changes – that's basically what GMOs are - Genetically Modified Organisms. They do this to give plants or animals new superpowers, like growing bigger, resisting pests, or even producing drugs. It's like giving them a genetic upgrade!
Reasons to Ditch the GMOs:
While long-term studies are still ongoing, some potential health concerns associated with GMO consumption include:
- Allergic Reactions: GMOs can introduce new proteins that may trigger allergies in some individuals.
- Antibiotic Resistance: Some GMO crops are engineered to be resistant to certain antibiotics, which could contribute to the rise of antibiotic-resistant bacteria.
- Environmental Impact: GMO crops can have unintended consequences on the environment, such as the development of herbicide-resistant weeds.
-
Ethical Concerns: Some people have ethical concerns about the use of genetic engineering in food production, such as the potential for unintended consequences and the impact on biodiversity.
Decode the Ingredient List as a Quick Self-Check:
- Plant-Based Protein Sources: Pay attention to the specific plants used (e.g. pea, brown rice, soy). If the ingredient list mentions specific varieties or is vague, there's a higher chance of GMOs being involved.
- Whey Protein: If the cows were fed GMO feed, the whey protein may contain traces of GMOs. Look for labels like "grass-fed" or "pasture-raised" or as in our case “No Lactose”, to minimize this risk.
